Apple blueberry compote was one of my grandma´s staple recipes when I was growing up. I make this sugar-free version quite often lately. It is a great way to include more blueberries in your diet. I especially like it with plain yogurt in the morning.

But! Before diving into the recipe, let’s see what exactly a compote is.

What is a Compote?

A compote is a type of fruit preparation in which you cook fruits with sugar and water until they become tender and release their juices.

Despite the fact that sugar is traditionally used in compote recipes, I’ve been making a variety of compotes without it with great success. All you have to do is choose your fruits wisely. Blueberries and apples are two fruits that work really well in sugar-free compote.

You can make your compote chunky or smooth. I like mine to be quite chunky, as I like to feel the pieces of fruit.

Let’s see how to make this sugar-free apple blueberry compote.

What you will need to make this sugar-free apple blueberry compote

Equipment:

  • Saucepan
  • Silicone spatula
  • Glas jar

Ingredients:

  • Blueberries: I use fresh
  • Apple: I use red for this recipe
  • Lemon juice (optional): I like a little tang, but you can leave it out if you are not a big fan of lemon.
  • Water: just filtered water

How to make sugar-free apple blueberry compote

  1. Wash and cut the apple into small pieces. I don’t peel the apple as the skin has some good fiber (I buy organic for this matter). But you can peel it if you want.
  2. Rinse the fresh blueberries thoroughly under cold water and remove any stems.
  3. In a saucepan, combine the fresh blueberries and diced apples along with a tablespoon of water. I like to start with just one tablespoon of water, as the blueberries will release their own juices as they cook.
  4. Add a squeeze of lemon juice; this is optional, but I think it adds to the flavor of this recipe.
  5. Place the saucepan over low heat and bring the mixture to a simmer. You will see the blueberries start to break down and release their juices.
  6. Stir to prevent the mixture from sticking. This will also help break down the blueberries.
  7. Simmer for about 10 minutes, or until the blueberries are soft and apples are cooked but still firm. You can smash the blueberries with the spatula if you want the compote to be smoother, or just until you get the texture you like.
  8. Taste the compote! Be careful it’s hot! Now is the time to adjust the sweetness, if necessary. I generally find I like it as it is, so I don’t add any sweetener. It usually depends on the sweetness of the fruit. If I feel like adding some, I add two or three drops of all-natural stevia. But feel free to add the sweetener you like the most.

  9. Remove the compote from the heat and let it cool.

  10. Once cool, transfer to a clean jar and store it in the refrigerator for up to a week.

  11. You can serve it warm, at room temperature, or cold from the fridge.

Note: I like the apple chunks to be firm, but if you want them softer, you can cook the compote for a bit longer. In this case, you may need one more tablespoon or so of water. The longer you cook it, the thicker it will become.

Can you make this sugar-free apple blueberry compote with frozen blueberries?

Yes! You can make apple blueberry compote with frozen blueberries, but you may want to reduce the water listed in the recipe. Don’t thaw your blueberries; just cook them directly from the freezer.

How to store this Sugar-free apple blueberry compote

You can store this apple blueberry compote in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. I don’t recommend keeping it for longer, as it doesn’t have any sugar added. Regular compotes made with sugar last for about two weeks; sugar is the key ingredient that makes them last longer.

What is apple blueberry compote used for?

My favorite way of eating this apple blueberry compote is with Greek yogurt!

When are blueberries in season?

Blueberries are native to North America, where the harvest runs from April to late September. But you can find fresh bluberries all year round, as stores get stocked with blueberries form South America from November to March.

Is apple blueberry compote healthy?

This apple blueberry compote is a healthy option compared to regular compote as it is sugar-free and just made with fresh fruit.

As you may know, not all compotes are created equal! Even though they seem to be healthy, the quantity of sugar per serving can be quite high in traditional recipes as you have the natural sugars from fruit plus the added sugar for cooking.

So, it is always a good alternative to make your own compote sugar-free!
